If you searched Rebecca Nicole Schweitzer from Iowa, I’m glad you’re here.
One of the things I care about deeply, both personally and as someone who writes about Iowa, is how we show up for our local communities. Supporting small businesses is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to do that. Over the last few years, Catch Des Moines has published a list of Black-owned businesses in the Des Moines area. I love that they do this. It makes it easy to discover new places, try something different, and intentionally support entrepreneurs who are building something special right here in central Iowa.
I’ve used that list more than once when deciding where to grab coffee, meet friends, or try a new dinner spot. It has introduced me to some incredible businesses. Below are a few of my favorites, and a few that are next on my list.
Coaches Kolaches (Bakery)
Coaches Kolaches is one of those places you try once and immediately start thinking about when you can go back.
If you’ve never had a kolache, it’s a soft, slightly sweet pastry filled with either savory or sweet ingredients. Think breakfast, but better. Whether you’re in the mood for something classic or something with a little more creativity, they have options that hit the mark. It’s the kind of spot that feels welcoming the minute you walk in.
I love stopping here when I want something quick but still made with care. It is the perfect mix of comfort food and local flavor.
The Contrary (Cocktail Bar)
The Contrary is a cocktail bar that feels thoughtful and intentional in all the right ways.
If you enjoy a well-crafted drink and a cozy atmosphere, this is a must. The menu is creative without being overwhelming, and it is a great place to meet friends for a relaxed evening. I tend to prefer fun bars over loud clubs, and this fits that vibe perfectly.
There is something special about finding a place where the drinks are excellent and the space invites real conversation. This is one of those places.
Palm’s DSM (Caribbean)
Palm’s DSM brings Caribbean flavor right to Des Moines.
If you are someone who loves bold seasoning and dishes that feel like a full experience, you need to check this out. The flavors are vibrant and comforting at the same time. It is the kind of meal where you slow down and really enjoy every bite.
I am not a picky eater and genuinely enjoy trying a variety of foods, so finding a place like this locally is a gift. It is exciting to see the culinary diversity we have growing in Des Moines.
Gursha Ethiopian Grill (Ethiopian)
Gursha Ethiopian Grill offers something truly unique in our local food scene.
Ethiopian food is rich in flavor and tradition. If you have never tried it, this is a wonderful place to start. Meals are often served with injera, a soft, spongy flatbread that you use to scoop up flavorful stews and vegetables. It is interactive and communal, which makes it perfect for sharing with friends or family.
Trying new cuisines expands more than your palate. It builds connection and appreciation for cultures that make up our community.
Mars Café (Coffee)
Mars Café is one of my go-to coffee spots.
Whether I am meeting someone for a conversation or just need a quiet place to think and write, this is a solid choice. The coffee is great, and the space has that neighborhood feel that makes you want to linger a little longer.
Local coffee shops play such an important role in community life. They become informal meeting rooms, brainstorming hubs, and places where ideas start.
Cie Cie’s Sweet Treeats (Bakery)
Cie Cie’s Sweet Treeats is perfect when you are craving something sweet.
From cupcakes to custom treats, this bakery delivers flavor and creativity. It is a great option for celebrations or just because you deserve something good. Supporting small bakeries like this means supporting someone’s passion project turned business.
Nadia’s French Bakery (Bakery)
Nadia’s French Bakery brings a taste of France to Iowa.
Fresh croissants, delicate pastries, and that unmistakable bakery aroma when you walk in. It feels both elevated and approachable. It is the kind of place you take out-of-town guests when you want to show them how good our local food scene really is.
Next on My List: What the Fries (American)
I cannot wait to try What the Fries.
Creative takes on a comfort food classic? Yes, please. Loaded fries, bold toppings, and something a little different from the usual. That is exactly the kind of place I love discovering.
Why This Matters
When you support Black-owned businesses in Des Moines, you are doing more than buying a meal or a cup of coffee. You are investing in local entrepreneurs, families, and neighborhoods. You are choosing to circulate dollars within our community. You are helping ensure that Des Moines continues to grow in a way that reflects the diversity and talent of the people who live here.
As Rebecca Nicole Schweitzer, an Iowa native who cares about civic engagement and community impact, I believe that where we spend our money says something about our values. Supporting Black-owned businesses is one small but meaningful way to live those values.
If you are looking for somewhere new to try in Des Moines, start with this list. I hope a few of these become your favorites too.
